CoveredCalifornia

The Brief:

While Covered CA is helping thousands of people who otherwise would not have health insurance, many people are foregoing the process due to the complicated application process.

If healthcare is mandatory, why does it have to be so difficult to navigate and apply for?

I re-designed their website, made it more user-friendly, condensed the steps for a more user-friendly experience while shopping and comparing health care plans.

The Problem:

How can the process of shopping for health care plans be a more succinct, intuitive process where the user feels content with their purchase and has a clear understanding of what plan they bought?

Heuristics:

The first thing I did was a heuristic evaluation of the current site at CoveredCA.com. It was important to me to have a strong understanding of what was working and what wasn’t so I could find the pain points that the users would encounter during their task flow.

I graded them on a scale of 1-5 (5 being worst)

Learnability – 3.6

Efficiency – 4

Memorability – 2.5

Error Management – 4.5

Satisfaction – 3.75

“I hate website that takes you to another page while trying to accomplish a task!”

“I got mad for long process just to get to the application page!”

The solution:

I started with the problem of the current homepage with lots of unnecessary information and poor page layout. I solved this issue with a more focused homepage and Need coverage page. Now the process of applying for Medical insurance are easiest to find.

The New User Flow:

In order to improve the emotional journey of purchasing plans, the sitemap and user flow needed to be clean and clear with the key user experience prominent from the home page.

 New Design:

The new design is really easy and clean for users and easy to understand what is being perches.

Wireframe:

After getting some feedback from users and experts, low-fi wireframes were built out, along with a clickable prototype. We incorporated clearer icons and made the text slightly larger based on our feedback.
