Discord Voice Integration with Xbox

Xbox decided to partner with Discord to help players connect and play with their cross-network communities. As a senior designer on the growth and acquisition team, I was working towards unlocking this path so players can find increase the pool of available friends they have access to. Our vision was to extend the Xbox brand beyond just the console into an ecosystem that included all of gaming.
Key responsibilities — Design execution
Impact — 2.5M+ monthly active users within the first 6-months of launch
Role:
Sr. Designer (UX/UI)
Contributions:
New long-term partnership with Discord, 2.5M+ monthly active users in the first 6 months.
Cross-Network Gaming Challenges:
As more games support cross-platform play, players face a new challenge: there’s no single place where they can easily connect and play with friends across different networks at the same time.
🎮 Popular cross-platform games:
-
Among Us
-
Fortnite
-
Minecraft
-
Rocket League
The Problem for Xbox Players:
Many Xbox players say they enjoy gaming less because their friends aren’t available at the same time or on the same platform. To coordinate gameplay, they often have to juggle multiple social apps just to get everyone online together.
The Solution: Discord Integration
Discord, already a go-to app for communication among PC and mobile gamers, proved to be the perfect platform to bridge the gap. Its popularity and functionality made it an ideal partner for cross-network play and social coordination.

The Challenge for Xbox Players:
Many Xbox users said they weren’t enjoying games as much because their friends weren’t online at the same time. To play together, they had to jump between different apps and social platforms just to coordinate.
Why Discord Was the Perfect Fit:
Since Discord was already a favorite among PC and mobile gamers for chatting and planning, it became the ideal choice to help Xbox players connect more easily across networks. It was the perfect partner to lead this cross-platform initiative.

Background: Previous Discord Integration:
Before this project, we had already partnered with Discord to allow players to link their Xbox and Discord accounts. However, the integration lacked meaningful functionality—there was no clear value or benefit for users after connecting the accounts.

Process:
The goal wasn’t to redesign Discord, but to create a seamless way for players to join and communicate while gaming. To join a Discord voice channel, users need to follow a specific navigation flow:
-
Select a server
-
Choose a voice channel within that server
The Xbox guide follows a similar pattern—selecting an item reveals more detailed options layered on top. This inspired us to design an experience that visually aligns with Xbox, while remaining intuitive for users already familiar with Discord.

Xbox’s layered Guide navigation inspired us to design an experience that felt native to Xbox, yet familiar to Discord users.
We placed the Discord entry point in the Guide since it’s the hub for social features and easily accessible anytime. This made launching Discord voice chats quick and intuitive for players.

Viewing Discord Servers on Xbox:
Xbox players can now access their full list of Discord servers directly from the Xbox Guide—no need to switch devices. I worked closely with engineering teams from both Xbox and Discord to make sure important metadata, like server names, icons, and activity indicators, were fully supported and displayed correctly.
This integration made it seamless for players to navigate familiar Discord environments without leaving the Xbox interface, bridging the gap between platforms.

Channel Design Insights & Revisions:
Initially, I mirrored Discord’s desktop design by previewing who was in each voice channel. But feedback showed this approach didn’t fit Xbox users' needs—controller navigation is more limited, and Xbox players don’t expect that interaction model.
Key issues:
-
Tapping a channel name to join isn’t a native Xbox pattern.
-
Full user lists took up space and hid other channels.
-
Discord’s UI favors individual avatars, not channel clarity.
Final Solution:
I simplified the view by grouping active users under each channel name. This allowed multiple channels to be shown without scrolling. Detailed info and “Join Channel” actions were moved to a third screen, creating a cleaner, more Xbox-friendly experience.

In-Call Experience & Language
We built the in-call UI on Xbox’s existing Party Chat system, with minor language tweaks. I worked with content designers to align terms like “Deafen” with Discord’s terminology, ensuring clarity and consistency for users.

Key Learnings:
-
Familiarity drives ease-of-use: Leaning into established mental models helps users feel comfortable and reduces the learning curve. Avoid reinventing patterns unless absolutely necessary.
-
User experience must stay front and center: In cross-company collaborations, it’s easy to get lost in business logistics. But clear, intuitive design decisions grounded in user needs help keep teams aligned and ensure the product delivers real value.
